Another Granite Mikes in the books

The New Hampshire Association of Broadcasters held its annual Granite Mikes Annual Meeting and Awards event this October and by all accounts it was a great night.  Celebrating 60 years as an organization the event took on a ‘50’s’ theme which included the invitations, décor, food and giveaways.

The cocktail portion of the event gives broadcasters an opportunity to catch up with current and former colleagues, competitors and others in the industry.  This year many NHAB members were able to meet the new New Hampshire Army National Guard Marketing officer, Staff Sergeant Carolina Compton.  Compton started her new position in the spring but had yet to meet many of the broadcasters responsible for playing the Guards NCSA recruitment messages.

The main event of the night was the Granite Mike Awards where 232 entries were submitted and 68 awards were distributed in 19 categories ranging from the year’s best news stories and commercials to top personalities and morning shows.  Among the major award winners was WZID-FM taking home the Station of the Year honors for the second straight year and WMUR-TV which won Station of the Year for television.

Recognized for going the extra mile was Great Eastern Radio Chief Engineer Chris Verde who won the “Above and Beyond” award.  Chris was nominated by several colleagues for his work in converting WHDQ to HD as well as building the HD2 signal broadcaster over a translator.  Verde also drove from the Cape to the Upper Valley one snowy night to get WHDQ back on the air after a storm.

“This was hands down the most diverse group of winners in recent memory for Granite Mike Awards,” said NHAB Executive Director Jordan Walton.

Capping the night was the prestigious Broadcaster of the Year Award.  This year the award was given to longtime radio broadcaster Peter St. James, currently with Great Eastern Radio’s 107.7 The Pulse, WTPL-FM.  See the full Broadcaster of the Year video on YouTube and the full list of Granite Mikes winners below.

We hope to see everyone at next year’s Granite Mikes on Thursday, October 29, 2015.  Save the date!
